Meet Alyson B., Database Analyst
In this series of "Day in the Life of ____", we will be highlighting the various professions Opportunity Village has to offer. This feature is focused on the role of Database Analyst.
What led you to OV/your current position?
I am a Database Analyst in the Fundraising department. I joined OV four years ago after being recruited by an employee. Working for a meaningful organization that gives back to and serves our community has always been important to me, so joining OV was a perfect fit.
What does a typical day look like for you?
On a typical day, I oversee all of the incoming monetary donations to our organization. Donations come to us in many forms, and I am responsible for making sure that we are good stewards of our organization by personally thanking each and every donor. There are many ways we show appreciation to our valued donors – mailing letters, sending emails, calling them, and even stopping by their office with a small gift or a signed card to say Thanks! I also oversee our donor database, which is called DonorPerfect. We use this software to keep profiles of all past and current donors, track all of the donations we receive, log all communications we have with our donors, and much more. It is a huge database – we have records going back to the 1990s, and there are tens of thousands of donors in our database.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
The most exciting part of my job is seeing how impactful my team is to the organization and to the individuals we serve. The Fundraising team is responsible for all of the monetary donations that this organization receives. We are a very small department of less than 10 people, but this small team works extremely hard to secure millions of dollars in donations each year to support the programs and services that we offer! It is a great feeling knowing that I am a part of a team that makes such a huge difference to the lives of our people served. Without the donations that this team secures, our programs and services would not be possible.
Who inspires you?
I am inspired by my mom. She immigrated to America as a teenager. Because of the complicated legal process surrounding immigration, she was the only one in her family that was able to come to America. Her family was not able to come until years later. So, she came to a new country alone and had no immediate family, no friends, and she didn’t speak any English. Several years later, she had kids and did not have any support from her loved ones. Despite having so little support, she grew up to become a successful business owner and the sole income earner for our family. She is a very hard-working and respectable woman, and her determination to build a great life for her kids was inspirational!
What is your favorite thing to do when you're not working?
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones. Whether it’s cooking, going out to a movie or show, or just hanging out at home and relaxing, I love having a day off with family, friends, or my dog!
