Meet Crystal V., Activities Coordinator
In this series of "Day in the Life of ____", we will be highlighting the various professions Opportunity Village has to offer. This feature is focused on the role of Activities Coordinator.
Crystal has been a part of the Opportunity Village team for over 34 years!
What led you to OV/your current position?
My father worked for Opportunity Village before I did. When he told me about it, I applied and was hired.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I help supervise the program participants and come up with ideas for different classes to offer to them. For example, the AmeriCorps member made alphabet titles out of paper and I made copies of more alphabet tiles and added small magnets to them so the staff can play Scrabble with the people served on the marker board. This gives them the chance to learn the alphabet and spell words. I spent a week teaching program participants about Astronomy and finished off the week by helping them write a group story – “Our Trip to Jupiter”.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
I am designing a Health and Wellness Program to offer to the people we serve. I use my experience from training for 18 years in the Martial Arts and other experiences I have had with exercise. I hope to be able to offer this program to all of the people we serve as a positive experience for their health and a unique program for Opportunity Village.
Who inspires you?
First and foremost, my parents, who were very kind, loving, and charitable people. The people Opportunity Village serves also inspire me. I get ideas from them by just working with them and realizing what they need help with.
What is your favorite thing to do when you're not working?
I love spending time with family and friends. I like to write poetry and sometimes short stories. I attend a writers group at the local library once a month, which has helped me become better at writing and expressing myself. I have had a few poems published after entering poetry contests and hope to continue to do this more.
