OV Spotlight: Janet Uthman

Opportunity Village is proud to highlight Board Secretary Janet Uthman, who has been a dedicated member of the OV Board since September 2022. Janet first became involved with Opportunity Village through her role at Cox Las Vegas.

Janet currently serves as the Las Vegas market leader and vice president of Cox Las Vegas, a position she has held since February 2022. A seasoned telecommunications and cable executive, Janet previously served as affiliate sales director for Disney Channel. She is also the chair of the Vegas Chamber and has been recognized by Cablefax Magazine as one of the “Most Influential Minorities in Media and Broadband,” as well as by Ebony Magazine as a “Power 100 Executive.”

Get to Know Janet:

Q: What is your favorite type of food?

A: I love Japanese food, especially sushi.

Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

A: I love to travel and always try to schedule a trip once a year. My husband and I have an upcoming trip to Spain in July.

Q: What is one thing you cannot live without?

A: My iPad.

Q: What is your favorite sports team?

A: I am a huge Las Vegas Raiders fan and have been a fan since their days in Oakland. My first live football game was with my father back in Oakland.

Q: If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?

A: To be invisible.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A: I would love to visit Bali. Traveling to eastern Asia is also a dream of mine.

Q: What are you most proud of?

A: I am most proud of my parents. My mother grew up in the segregated south and went on to achieve successful career in Silicon Valley. My dad was an engineer at Xerox.

Q: What is your favorite holiday tradition?

A: Christmas will always be my favorite holiday. I never missed a Christmas at home. It was my mother’s favorite—she went all out. She was a master baker and would make cookies from scratch to mail to relatives and friends.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give people who are thinking about getting involved with Opportunity Village?

A: Lead with your heart. From the moment I toured OV, I was in awe. It has been such an honor to serve on the Opportunity Village Board of Directors.

Q: What is your favorite OV event:

A: I love the Magical Forest season and Camelot. Camelot is my favorite event of the year.
